Haddingtons – The Name

Of Scottish descent and living in Ontario, Canada, John Peter “Jack” McLeod left home at age 12.  Jack hid in a barrel on a lake freighter in the Great Lakes. He was allowed to work as a cabin boy and eventually taught himself to navigate sea vessels.  By age 25 he had worked his way from deckhand to captain – the youngest deep sea captain to receive papers in North America at the time.  One of the vessels Jack captained was The Haddington – circa 1914.

With an understanding of oil transport, Jack went on to develop an oil distribution company. He amassed great wealth including a mansion in Hamilton, Ontario and a yacht on the Great Lakes. Fortunately for me, the Great Depression ensued in 1929 and decimated Jack’s fortune. This led him to move to America and find a new trade where his daughter Dorothy met my grandfather Peter John Polombo.  I thought my great grandfather had an interesting story and the name HADDINGTONS is a tribute to his memory. – Michael Polombo
